WHAT A DIFFERENCE A year can make.
When Arkansas Business ranked the state's public companies by quarterly net income in December 1999, PetQuarters Inc. and Ammonia Hold. Inc., both of Lonoke, and Loislaw.com Inc. of Van Buren were considered too small and thinly traded to mess with. This year, with the state's roster of publicly traded companies dwindling rapidly, list-makers can't afford to be so choosy. The list for the most recent quarter -- the third of the fiscal year for most companies, but not all -- starts predictably: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of Bentonville at the top, with Alltel Corp. of Little Rock a distant second and Murphy Oil Corp. of El Dorado an even more distant third.
