Economy concerns some nonprofits: opinion mixed on effects to charitable donations.

PHYLLIS HAYNES, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR of the Arkansas Foodbank Network, has already seen a drop in the amount of food donated to her organization in 2008.

The nonprofit's biggest event, the Letter Carriers Food Drive, held in May, collected 79,000 pounds of food, off about 28 percent from 2007.

"We're finding people who don't have as much discretionary income are not making as many donations as they have in the past," Haynes said. "I think that's because they can't afford to."
