Arkansas Republicans in land of opportunity: national political changes, bevy of strong candidates raise hopes among GOP leaders.

Leaders of the Republican Party of Arkansas use a to describe what they hope is their party s coming of age.

"There's a sleeping giant in Arkansas," says Phyllis Kincannon, acting chairwoman of the party.

"The elections of 1994 did something besides get Republicans elected," says Richard Bearden, director of the party's Victory '96 campaign. "There was a perception that people thought Democrats would win regardless. That attitude has changed."
