NORTHWEST ARKANSAS is a cultural oasis thriving with live theater, art galleries, symphonies and historic attractions. Fort Smith, Fayetteville and Russellville are the centers of population, and quaint Eureka Springs and the rolling Buffalo National River are where tourists and locals go for weekend escapes. But it's the awesome beauty of the Ozark and Ouachita mountain ranges that gives this part of the state its flavor. Here's a short list of places to go and sights to see.

Beaver Lake State Park--Surrounded by campgrounds, marinas and resorts. Cold-water trout fishing below Beaver Dam. Call (479) 789-2380. Belle of the Ozarks--Scenic 10-mile cruises on Beaver Lake aboard a 49-passenger U.S. Coast Guard-certified vessel in Eureka Springs. Call (479) 253-6200. Buffalo National River--A favorite destination for canoeing, hiking and fishing. In Newton, Searcy and Marion counties. Call (479) 741-5443. Bull Shoals State Park--Trout fishing in the White River and a shady forest for steamy summer months. The park has 105 campsites. Call (870) 431-5521. Devil's Den State Park--Features a small lake; 14 cabins; hiking, horseback riding and mountain bike trails; nature programs; and Rent-A-Backpack. In southern Washington County. Call (479) 761-3325. Dickson Street--The center for live entertainment. Offers shops, bistros, galleries and night clubs. In Fayetteville. Eureka Springs Gardens--Arkansas' premier botanical gardens, plus a gift shop and historical theater. Call (479) 253-9244. Fayetteville Downtown Square--Historic district featuring commercial buildings and homes restored to their original 19thcentury grandeur. The Old Post Office at 1 Center Square is the focal point. Fort Smith National Historic Site--A restored courtroom, jail and gallows used by "Hanging Judge" Isaac Parker. Call (479) 783-3961.
